  2. I don't really know alot of details. Eddie was in a hurry and just said he had an incident where an umpire was punched by a player.

  5. I have since heard many versions of who and where but they all contradict each other so. For now we will have to wait until the next league meeting to ask Eddie.

  6. What a moron! The umpire should press charges against the player and teach his ignorant ass a lesson. This league is by far, one of the best organized adult baseball leagues to play in. Hope you guys make an example of that idiot!

  7. WHAT A LONG SEASON BUT WE FINALLY MADE IT TO PLAYOFFS...IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT...I HOPE U GUYS HAVE THE SECOND GAME OF THE DOUBLE HEADER PLAYED IN THE SAME FIELD THE TOP SEEDS ARE PLAYING IN!!!

  8. For those of you that don't know, Eddie schedules the playoff games. I (Robert) just run the website and blogs. I sometimes put up polls or give my opinions on the web but ultimately Eddie does what Eddie wants.

    Robert

PS Good luck to whatever team you are in the playoffs.

  13. Remember guys, These are just my observations. I don't have any special powers or hard facts. I think my predictions add a very little something to the playoffs. My favorite story is a few years ago the Titans beat the Durham Bulls to win the TOP division on a 9th inning home run. As the guy ran around the bases he kept yelling to me, "I told you Robert,m you were wrong. That was fucking hilarious. Like a Raider fan always says "Just win baby".

  14. Hey Robert yesterday in our playoff game the other protested the game because one of the cards did not have a league stamp on it. I have had those cards made since the beginning of the season and did not notice it. The problem I have is with the way the other team decided to protest. I noticed when we got to the field that the other team had a few ringers. I decided to ask for cards and sure enough those players did not have one. They were a little upset that I did not let those players play the game. So we exchanged cards at the beginning of the game. Everything was fine until the lost the lead in the top of the 9th. The whole game they did not check the cards since they were up. In the top of the 9th my team came back from a 5 run deficit and scored 10 runs that inning. That is when they tried to find a reason to protest a game. They first complained that a couple of my IDs did not have a signature on the back, but then said nevermind because that did not matter. They were upset because they could not use the ringers and was looking for a easy way into the championship. I can assure you that the ID without the stamp is not fake. Mistakes can happen, dealing with making so many IDs at once a person can forget to stamp one of them. What's your opinion on this Robert?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Of course I am only going by your account but what I don't understand is that the ID are ONLY suppose to be used to identify the player BEFORE THE PLAYERS FIRST AT BAT. Once the player bats once, and no ID issue was brought up. It is assumed that the everyone (Opponent and Umpire) agree that the player is a legal player. The finally thing is that I don't believe a teams should be penalize for an ID that was not filled out correctly by the league. I would suggest ALL TEAMS double check their ID cards now. Remember, the other teams will have a different version of this story.

  16. Yesterday, july 15, 2012 The first playoff game at azusa being played on the jv field was the Mudhens and the Rays. The game started off very well, as in both teams scoring and getting outs and what not. But when it came down to the umpires getting involved, OH MAN!! plz i would recommend for playoffs u give each team top umpires! these dudes where about 70 yrs old each! they bothe couldnt make a call if there life depended on it. ex. The Rays hit a shot hit to right field, the Mudhens right fielder tracked the ball down and made a spectacular diving catching. the ball was caught over his head and his momentum took him to the floor. not staying on the floor longer then 2 seconds and getting up, both teams swapped places knowing he clearly caught the ball, the umps ruled it a NO CATCH! not Only were the Mudhens playing the Rays, but they also had to play the Umps. The Mudhens ended up beating the Rays by a final score of 15-10...the point of this, is plz get playoff umpires for playoffs. if both teams worked theres butts off all season to get to the playoffs, they both atleast deserve some very well umpires and not get a game thrown by some dudes who r living off there social security and and do some work on the wknds for fun. yes its sunday baseball, but its also a competitive sport and we all want to win. Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  17. So the team cannot protest the game if the player had been playing all game and they did not bring up the issue with the ID until the last inning? I made sure to check everyone one of their player's ID when before they even got their at bats.

  18. That is my understanding of the rules

  21. I agree on the shitty umpires! league is so expensive to have blues who dont make a effort to get a good angle. And since im talking shit umpires get decent money so they should not complain about my request- they should rotate them every week blues get too confortable with teams that have fields which by the way teams pay for and if they are stuck with one shitty blue it's not fair!

  22. In our playoff game against the Naranjeros on Workman's varsity field, our 5th hitter cranked one over the left field fence in what most people would have considered a fair ball. With a confused look, the umpire threw his hands up and announced "I Didn't See it" and decided to replay the pitch.

I remember thinking: "What the fuck, did sand or an eyelash get in your eyes right before the pitch, or are you afraid to make an assertive call?"

At that point in the game, we were already ahead and it would have helped with the momentum.

Later in the game, the ump made a bad call that worked in our favor. The Naranjeros right fielder CLEARLY made a good play and caught a line drive. The umpire ruled it a trapped ball and let my guy on to first base. That was a second of many bad calls.

I understand that all umps will get shit wrong from time to time, but the guy at Workman is very defensive about complaints, even if you have the fucking MLB rule book in your hand.

Anyway, good luck to the Naranjeros

  31. We had a great season! We beat ourselves and gift wrapped the championship for the other team. Obviously we took the lost and that's alright. However, from a former umpire and college player I feel that the league should know about the quality of umpire you displayed out on the Feild. To start the inconsistancy at home plate. I know that we are not all perfect. However, it seemed that that blu had no clue. He missed a play at the plate. I know that because my wife got that on film! Even the other umpire had to look away that how bad that call was. I could send you a copy of that play if needed. The worst part of this is that HE WAS ALL OVER IT or so we thought! One run may not change the much but it can change an inning or momentum.
Nevertheless, we had a great season. I feel that for a championship game the league should choose the best umpires. We take our lost in stride and aim for next season.

  35. Since I can remember there have always been umpire issues. With that said there is only so much that can be done. So whats the answer? I always hear, we need to get better umpires. I agree but the issue is from where? I have called umpire associations and all their umpires have umpiring credentials. The issue is their fees. Their fees range from $60 to $75 per game. We all know the fees to play in this league and other costs are substantial. The question is, do we want to add to it to improve the umpire situation. Since I dont play in the league I really don't have a preference. I can see each side of this issue. The problem is getting a consensus of our teams to choose a solution. Im sorry to say that if we leave this to Eddie, I don't think things will ever change.

  36. Hey Robert,
    Regarding the umpire remarks:
Its Sunday Baseball and its played at local high school.Cmon if our team was that good we would be playing our games at a Major league park . I go to hit the ball not worry about balls and strikes or bad calls. I'm there to relieve stress and have fun playing ball .. Thank God for Sunday baseball ..

    1. Well said...Even major league umps get the calls wrong from time to time..i don't care about bad calls strikes or balls, Sunday is that last day for a fun day then back to reality on Monday!!! i think actor Tom Hands said it the best "there's no crying in baseball"

  37. Just out of curiosity, I posted this question on my other blog. One of my pet peeves is my players that always swing at the first pitch. I've heard it all but in the end, I still think its a bad idea. What do you guys think. Is it ok to always swing at the first pitch?

    Robert

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. if its a strike, why not? most picthers, especially in a adult league like to try and get a head. which pitcher likes to behind 0-1? none! so as a better, y not swing first pitch if its a strike.

      Delete
    2. I agree with pitchers "wanting" to throw a first pitch strike. Whether they do or don't and whether its a fastball or not is the question. I believe there are situations when swinging at a first pitch hopefully fastball is a good idea but for most players, I think its best to work the count.

      Robert

      Delete
  38. Interesting topic (swinging at first pitch). I wish my starters would not swing at the first pitch in most of their at bats (only do it in the later part of the game). Here are my reasons why:

    1) In Sunday beer leagues, pitchers tend to throw lots of "balls."

    2) It is a guaranteed way of wearing out opposing pitchers. And since most teams don't have more than one "ace," he will be quicker to leave the game and a less talented pitcher might follow.

Ha ha, but i'm the worst hitter on my team...so what the hell do I know.

  39. Re: Umpires some say shitty umpires are ok because it's sunday league....Wrong we dont play in a shitty league compared to other leagues there is a reason for $900 league fees of 14 games now. Eddie hikes up the fees then the quality should go up! Oh! even the pros make bad calls once in a while YES!! but not most of the time and there is umpires like that in this league.Heredia blues get at least $40 from each team that is $80 per game minimum.Get some from the association and rotate them!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hey Robert,

This season you guys are strict on league fees, but in return none of the division champs have received there trophies?

Also all playoff games deserve (2) umpires. What's up with that?

    ReplyDelete
  41. I agree. Just remember this is not my league.

    Robert

    ReplyDelete
  42. I regards to (swinging @ the first pitch), As a manager i expect my leadoff batter to take the fist pitch of the game.

As a player i feel, i should be SMART enough to know when I need to swing @ ths first pitch.

Early in the game koo but late in a close game will see. Maybe the pitcher is getting tire or maybe he constently throwing firts pitch strikes??

  43. Its funny how people dont complain when the calls go their way ... Also if your here just to " swing and hit balls " u should go play softball ... baseball is a passion for some of us and we PAY to play and PLAY to win .... With that said havin to play 10 against 9 because of an umpire that is GETTING paid to do what he does is not right yea people make mistakes but when they r obvious is just terrible and unfair most teams deserved their championship im sure but one team in particular was classless but whats done is done ... Good luck in this new season to the true baseball teams who play with heart and passion and dont just come to hit the ball ...thats what batting cages and softball r for

  44. Robert its funny you didn't post the fact that the terrible call was recorded on video! I mean terribble call! Maybe you should post the other post I put up. U decided not to. I wonder why? It wasn't much of a complaint it was just to let you know that it was recorded. Re-read the other post you decided no to put up.

  46. TO ALL: How many players in your team are always complaning about strikes and balls?

Sure some of the blues r s--t but theirs alot more shitty hitters than unpires in a game.

Ive noticed in my team the shittiest hitters complain the most. These are my TOP 5 complaints of my shitty hitters.

    5. We dont have the right bats..
    4. The blue took the out of my hands...
    3. I was trying to place the ball...
    2. The pitcher is throwing too slow...
    1. I just miss it... (YEAH RIGHT)

What r some LAME excuses you or your team says when they dont hit?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Those are great excuses. I gotta remember some of them. :)

  48. The issue with some umps in the league is A) they get comfortable and call in their job. B) they lack the training to do the job. Case in point, for two seasons I played on one field, where the umpire was the same one and every week, the umpire would make bad calls. Usually as the game was winding down. I then ran into the same umpire and his skills had drastically improved. After the game I asked him, hey, great job. You were consistent and called a good game. He told me that he benefited from some umpire classes he went to and the skills he learned have helped him to be a better umpire. So the potential is there with some of the umps that officiate our games. Most are players who figured out that they could get paid to go play. All we ask as players is that they hustle, stay partial, know the rules and be consistent.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I agree with some of what u said. R u speaking as a coach, hitter or pitcher? I think all three have diferent views of balls strikes and rules.

Does the league even have a rule book? If so, what is it? Where can I get it?

All of this means is (SHIT). When u play Sunday-b all u need is one AB to find out what kind of umpire ur dealing with, if your not sure ask ur catcher or pitcher..

All i need from the Umpire is for him to SHOW UP! Unless his calling strikes 1foot of the plate. Im going up there hacking perferly AT THE FIRST PITCH.

STOP CRYING ABOUT UMPIRES AND IF U DONT LIKE THE WAY THEY UMPIRE GIVE THEM HELP OR HELP THEN GET SOME...

  55. I joined this league a few years ago and at the meeting I attended two coaches looked and sounded like they were ready to throw blows. One was calling the other a cheater because he would consistently and traditionally bring in ringers for the playoffs. The other coach argued that IDs were not needed in the top division and the complaining coach was welcomed to bring in ringers himself.

I thought the entire conversation was ludicrous and I did not understand why the league (eddie) would allow such behavior. If you recall, I emailed you a suggestion on how the ID issue could be addressed leveraging technology. I continue to hear/read about IDs, playoffs and ringers, the issue has not been addressed by the league.

I still do not understand why any player would remain on a team that can push them to the side to win some trophy with ringers. Or for that matter how a team that has earned their way to the playoffs is cheated from competing on equal footing. A league representative should be at the game and declare a forfeit for the team that brings non-roster players to play.

I did go to the Aztec website and I was pleasantly surprised to see that the Aztec league is leveraging technology to ensure that players are part of a team and bringing in ringers is a little more difficult.

    The form looked familiar.

  57. what are we going to do about the BLUES. Had a blue chage his call just becuase the team explianed what they were doing. We Had Runner at second and third. ball flyed out to right field boht runners taged up and advanced. Runner at third scored runner at second advanced to third. picther got back on the rubber and threw the ball to third with out stepping off. Blue called a Balk but got surounded by the infield and was told that they were throwing back to third becuase they didn't thing the runner tagged up. So he Changed his call. We still won the game . But I don't think that was right of him to change his call after getting jumped on by the other team.

  59. IT doesnt matter if you have two umpires or one they will still make horrible calls! Some empires just dont care its just another paycheck. Some umpires or just too old and dont have good vision, like the one in Asuza high school. It was 106 degrees and he was umpiring behind the place and it was 11 25 and still that old man didnt drink one sip of water. Ball hit down the line clearly foul call it fair and i snap at him i got kick out, game over. How is an old man going to make the right call in that situation im sure he had blurred vision, does anybody know if he ended in the hospital of dehadration?

And there is a lot of players out there and you know who your are that do stupid things everyday.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I was talking to a team from the TOP division and he suggested that for the TOP division we have a 25 man roster to address the ringer issue. The logic is that with a set 25 man roster, all teams are aware of the "ringers" BEFORE THE PLAYOFFS start. What do you guys think?

    Robert

    ReplyDelete
  64. 25 man roster or 12 man roster? What matters is that each player have a certain number of games under his belt to quality for the playoffs...PERIORD. This has been brought up for almost a decade. The worst offenders in the past are now the biggest "CRYBABIES". It was done to many teams in the past, where players that took no hacks or ever threw one pitch during the season; were in the clean up spot or on the bump for the playoffs. Why was nothing done then? All of a sudden it's an issue. Are the guys that pay players to show up running out of money? Or don't want to pay the whole season, just the playoffs...the hell with that! Make each guy have to play half the games and all our problems will be solved. Other leagues require this and players know this. That's why they blow off our games to qualify for other teams they play on. Hense the forfeits that occured alot in the upper divison. Everyone has guys that play in multiple teams. Robert tell Eddie to grow a pair. Who runs this league, him or the managers?

  72. Sorry to harp on the umpire issue, but i umped high school ball locally for 2 years and understand an umpire is supposed to be a non factor in a game. But, that is a hard thing to do when the umpires are prety much in one of the teams dugout being buddy buddy with the players. Not a good way to call a fair game. It happens every week. I have been on both sides of the issue. On top of that, it sux when you only get to play 8 innings because you have to wait for the umpire to get done with story time to start an inning, then the time limit runs out.

  106. On the road to this year’s World Series, very exciting playoff games have been the norm. For instance, you have to love how the St. Louis Cardinals were one strike from being sent packing for the summer twice and were able to avoid elimination by coming back in the ninth inning and instead sent the Washington Nationals home. Another example is Raul Ibañez who was called in to pinch hit for a slumping Alex Rodriguez in the ninth inning with his team down by one run,all he does is take the first offering over the right field wall for a homerun to tie the ball game. Then tops it off by coming up a few innings later and hits the walk-off winning homerun.
I am sure many of you do this while you watch a game, you put on your manager’s cap. I know I do, and I noticed one thing twice in two different games. Both the Orioles and Tigers had runners on first and second and no outs. It was early in the game and the score was 0-0 in each instance. My call was, sacrifice the batter, move the runners into scoring position and put the pressure on the other team.
But each time, the managers let the batter swing away and in both instances, no runs were scored.
Now granted I do not have full information, maybe the guys at bat where the worst bunters in the history of baseball and it would of being suicide. But outside of that, I believe the object of the game is to get runners across home plate. The probabilities of a run scoring definitely increase by moving the runners 90 feet. You avoid a double play. You can get a run in with another out (fly ball or ground ball to the right side)
    Wonder what others would do?

  108. Just curious before i bring it up to Eddie, but do any of you other managers/teams ever seem to get all away games? And i don't mean home or away as in top of the inning batters or bottom of the inning batters, i mean home field (the field you asked to play at when you first joined the league). Or do you guys travel about a half hour away every week. My team, who has successfully competed from the bottom division up to the top division in this league for about six years now (and i only bring this up because you would think that would insure some seniority over the newly joined teams), hasn't played at our "home" field yet this season and we only played three "home" games all of last season. For our present season though, twelve out of the fourteen games we play, we're driving about twenty-three miles away (at the farthest) and eighteen miles away (on average) when the feild i had asked for and in the past have had no problem getting and splitting with other teams in our league is only ONE mile away from the majority of my players homes. We've been putting up with this the last two seasons now but with gas prices the way they are, its almost becoming unaffordable to play baseball in this league with all the other fees we have to pay, and that's a shame. I have no problem driving twenty miles to go play a baseball game, as i'm sure alot of you don't, but when its every Sunday, thats when it becomes an issue and a little frustrating. I know i probably went a little too far with all this. It's not like any of you can help me out with this problem. But like i said, i'm just curious to hear from other teams on this issue before i bring it up to Eddie!

    Thanks Guys!

  111. The system is NOT correct and the standing were off making us believe we were a game ahead... (Run differential) IF YOU WANT TO PLAY BY BIG LEAGUE RULES YOU HAVE TO PLAY BY THE FULL RULE BOOK!!! (you can't pick and chose what rules to play by!!!) IN THE BIG LEAGUES THERE IS A PLAY OFF!!!!!!!!
    NOT NO RUN DIFFERENTIAL!!!!

HOW THE SEASON IS RUN INCORRECTLY:
If you get to play the last place team (2) in one season your run differential would be pretty high. Now if you have to play the first place team (2) times in a season your run differential would be low. IF YOU ONLY PLAY THE LAST PLACE TEAM (1) TIME IN THE SEASON AND THE FIRST PLACE TEAM (2) IN A SEASON THEN THE TEAM THAT GETS TO PLAY THE LAST PLACE TEAM (2) TIMES WILL HAVE A LARGER RUN DIFFERENTIAL...

Correct way to play is everyone has to play each other twice... and then you can implement a run differential...

As of now... it is wrong to implement the run differential!! Now the correct way for the playoffs to be played should go off of the powers of schedule instead of a run differential.

until the season get's corrected. THAT IS THE ONLY TRUE, JUSTICE, CORRECT, PROPER WAY TO PLAY....

I am dumbfounded by this league, for having some many teams and so many players that they can't figure it out how to do things correctly.

    suggestions:
    (2) umpires for every play off games
    accurate records of the season.
YOU PLAY BY THE BOOK YOU LIVE BY THE BOOK.... THEN WHY WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO BIG CHOICES WE LOOK AWAY FROM THE BOOK!!!

    STICK TO THE RULE BOOK!!!!

The point is this league is one of the best, but the decision's they make some times are selfish like going from 18 games every other season to 14 games every season, and if your in the top division you only get 12 unless you make it to the playoffs...
As for the fields they're Fkn horrible as it is.

Mexican American Baseball in the Inland Empire

Mexican American Baseball in the Inland Empire celebrates the thriving culture of former teams from Pomona, Ontario, Cucamonga, Chino, Claremont, San Bernardino, Colton, Riverside, Corona, Beaumont, and the Coachella Valley. From the early 20th century through the 1950s, baseball diamonds in the Inland Empire provided unique opportunities for nurturing athletic and educational skills, ethnic identity, and political self-determination for Mexican Americans during an era of segregation. Legendary men's and women's teams--such as the Corona Athletics, San Bernardino's Mitla Café, the Colton Mercuries, and Las Debs de Corona--served as an important means for Mexican American communities to examine civil and educational rights and offer valuable insight on social, cultural, and gender roles. These evocative photographs recall the often-neglected history of Mexican American barrio baseball clubs of the Inland Empire.

  154. hey robert i been around this league since i was about 5 years old. My dad has played for this league he has managed a couple of teams here also. Anyways what i want to tell u is that the umpires now in days are really bad. I understand that there human and we ALL make mistakes but these umpires really suck. Is there some kind of training they can get so they can be certified umpires. I know its a lot to ask but im just saying

    ReplyDelete
  155. I always tell everyone, I can understand the frustration of dealing with some umpires. The biggest issue I see is as always money. The problem is most certified umpires do not want to work for $40. They can make that much in a Little league game that last alot less time so therefore they can do as many as 5 games in a day. I heard one umpire say he did 8 games in one day. So we end up with former players or retired people umpiring and we all know how thats working. While training could help, I have to believe in the long run we still end up with the same caliber umpires. So do you think its time to raise the umpire fees to lets say $65 and hire CIF certified umpires? Great comment.

    Robert

    ReplyDelete
  156. i guess we get what we pay for lol. But its so true better umpires do cost more money

    ReplyDelete
  157. we should hire cif certified umpires for the championship games. Would that be a good idea?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Make them play MLB the show on ps3 or xbox it really helps them to see the location's and spots.
      Just a idea!
They should have a umpire test of some sort every season.

      Delete
  158. The league get may reach out to a "friend of the league" that is a CIF (or better) certified as a consultant to review each umpire with on-field evaluations (at least once a season) as follow up & enforced by the league.
Eventually, it would create consistancy throughout the league and the umpires will only be better for it, as it should pick up make their game.

    Rey/Tides

    ReplyDelete
  159. From a league standpoint it doesn't make a difference since teams pay the umpires. The problem would be getting teams to agree to be willing to pay more money. Maybe having only CIF certified umpires for the TOP and AAA division only. What do you guys think?

    Robert

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes Robert that would be the best thing to do is give the top and AAA the (CIF) umpires and also add more games each season, its time for you guys to give back to this League, it makes me sick how much money the League makes and to know you keep taking from us, if you wanna be the best League you have to do what's best for you're League.

      Delete
    2. First of all its not my place to give "back" to the league because this is not my league. I help Eddie and he compensates me for my time but that's it. I don't know how much you think this league makes but if its anything like my league its about 5k a year profit. This breaks down to a little over $2 hour and that makes me sick. Field expenses take like 60% of all income. I can tell you that I make alot more from my work at METRO than this or any league has ever paid me. Look at all the other leagues and see that the fees are pretty similar. There is a reason for that. Trust me making a league takes alot of work and hours. If Eddie is making alot more than that I would be very surprised. Finally, getting a majority of teams to agree to be willing to pay $65 for umpires will be very difficult. It always is.

      Robert

    3. IF IT MAKES U SIK MAKING 2$ AN HOUR Y EVEN BOTHER DEALING WITH THE LEAGUE. IM JUST SAYING. NO OFFENSE TO ANYBODY

    4. And that's why I said 'you guys' Idc who's in charge of the League but whoever is needs to give back and do what's right!......
Cuz I know how much this League makes apart from yours you don't have as many teams,
Now 62 teams times 900 is 55,800 minus 60percent is what you said right? Do you know what the profit is every 14 game season? I do!! Its 22,320 now add that up twice a year!!
44,640 in one year now you expect us to pay more for umpires, balls, rings .'Cmon man'

      Delete
    7. Well for the record I do care who is in charge of the league and its not me. I have no control over "giving back" or pocketing profits. But I think you really need to attend a meeting an voice your opinions. BTW you math is off by alot. If you have attended any meetings you will hear Eddie complain about most teams still owe money. Second of all you need to include that not all teams pay $900 but $800. There are even some teams that don't pay anything because of their donation of fields. I guess all I can say is that if you are not happy, you need to do what you need to do.

  161. WOW!!!! – It’s funny do see how much the lower divisions complain about. All you lower times complain about everything – i.e. that team has no I.D.’s., not using the right baseballs, not having a uniform, not checking in with the umpire, or bad umpire, etc…. before complaining about other’s (teams, umpires, equipment, etc..) you should look at your own team - most of the teams can hit a slow pitch, make so many errors in an inning, blame everyone else for their own troubles, etc…
Doesn’t matter what the umpires say or the other teams do – suck it up and move on
The more you complain – the less chance you can win
You have a time limit or 9 innings – duh
No wonder you can’t play in the AAA or top division
